Heymarket can check each contact's phone number and mark it as textable or not textable, so you know which contacts can actually receive SMS. Landlines can't receive texts, and messages sent to them fail silently while still using credits.
There are three ways to verify numbers:
- Verify Phone Numbers on Contact Create checks new contacts automatically as they're added.
- Verify existing contacts checks every contact already in your account, once.
- Re-verify checks a single contact from its profile.
The first two are in Admin > Contacts and require admin access.
Verify new contacts automatically
Once turned on, every new contact’s phone number is checked when the contact is created manually, through CSV import, synced from an integration, or added through the Heymarket API. The setting is off by default.
- Go to Admin > Contacts.
- Find Verify Phone Numbers on Contact Create.
- Turn the toggle On.
The result usually appears within a few seconds of the contact being created. Contacts created before you turned the setting on aren't checked; use Verify existing contacts for those.
Verify existing contacts
Use this to check every contact already in your account. You don't need the automatic setting turned on to run it.
- Go to Admin > Contacts.
- Under Verify Phone Numbers on Contact Create, click Verify existing contacts.
- Review the confirmation and click Verify contacts.
Verification runs in the background, so you can keep working. Accounts with many contacts may take a while to finish.
See a contact's result
Each contact's result appears in the Textable field on the contact's profile.
- Go to Contacts and open a contact.
- Find the Textable field in the details panel on the right, below Status.
| Textable value | Meaning |
|---|---|
| True | The number can receive SMS (mobile or VoIP). |
| False | The number is a landline and can't receive SMS. |
| Not verified | The number hasn’t been checked yet, or the lookup couldn’t identify it. You’re only charged a credit when the lookup succeeds, so failed or unidentified lookups are free. |
Re-verify a single contact
Use this to check one contact's number again, for example after the number changes or if a contact shows Not verified. This works whether or not the automatic setting is on.
- Open the contact.
- Click the Textable dropdown.
- Select Re-verify.
- Click Re-verify in the confirmation.
The Textable field updates with the new result.
What the results mean
Only numbers that definitely can't receive SMS are marked not textable.
| Number type | Result |
|---|---|
| Mobile | Textable |
| VoIP | Textable |
| Landline | Not textable |
| Can't be identified | No change |
Verification never opts contacts out. Broadcasts and campaigns still send to not-textable numbers unless you exclude them yourself.
Credits
Each phone number verification uses 1 text credit. This applies to automatic verification of new contacts, Verify existing contacts, and Re-verify, so check your credit balance before verifying a large contact list.
FAQ
Will Heymarket stop me from texting a not-textable number? No. Verification only labels the contact. You can still message them, and they're still included in broadcasts unless you exclude them.
Why is a VoIP number marked textable? Many VoIP numbers can receive SMS, so we only mark a number not textable when it's a landline.
Why does a contact show Not verified? Either it hasn't been checked yet, or the lookup couldn't identify the number. Unidentified numbers are left unchanged rather than guessed. You can try Re-verify from the contact's profile.
Are contacts created from a new chat checked? No. Only contacts created manually, through CSV import, or through the API are checked automatically. You can still use Re-verify on any contact.
Does turning the setting off undo existing results? No. Turning it off stops new contacts from being checked. Results already recorded stay on the contact.
