How to Send an Email Broadcast
Email broadcasts are a powerful way to send one-time messages to a large audience. You can use them for newsletters, promotional campaigns, and important announcements. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about creating, sending, and tracking performance of your email broadcasts in Heymarket.

You have three options for creating your email broadcast:
- Rich Text Editor: This is a simple, word-processor-style editor that is perfect for text-based emails.
- Drag and Drop Editor: Our intuitive drag and drop editor allows you to create visually stunning emails with images, buttons, and other elements without writing a single line of code. Heymarket also offers visually appealing prebuilt out of the box sample email templates to use. Click on ‘select template’ to view more options
- Code-Based Editor: If you have your own custom HTML template, you can use our code-based editor to import and edit it directly.
How to Broadcast to Lists (Segments of Contacts)
Lists are segments of your contacts based on shared properties, such as their custom fields like, purchase history, or location.
- Benefits of segmenting: Sending broadcasts to specific lists allows you to deliver more relevant and personalized content, which can lead to higher engagement and conversion rates.
Promotional vs. Transactional Broadcasts
It's important to correctly classify your broadcasts as either promotional or transactional.
- Promotional: These are marketing messages, such as newsletters, special offers, and new product announcements.
- Transactional: These are functional messages that are triggered by a specific user action, such as an order confirmation, shipping notification, or password reset.
Marking your broadcasts correctly is important for compliance and for ensuring that your transactional messages are not affected by marketing subscription preferences.
Compliance Requirements
To comply with anti-spam laws like the CAN-SPAM Act, you must include the following in all promotional emails:
- Business Address: Your physical mailing address must be included in the footer of your email.
- Opt-Out Mechanism: You must provide a clear and easy way for recipients to unsubscribe from your emails. Heymarket automatically adds an unsubscribe link and an address in the footer to all promotional broadcasts .
Opt-In Considerations
Before sending any marketing emails, it's crucial to have permission from your contacts. This is known as "opt-in."
- What is opt-in? Opt-in is the process of getting a contact's explicit permission to send them marketing communications.
- Why is it important? It's not only a legal requirement in many regions (like with GDPR and CCPA) but it also ensures you're sending messages to people who are interested in your business, which improves engagement and reduces the chances of your emails being marked as spam.
- How to collect opt-ins: You can collect opt-ins through website forms, at the point of sale, or any other touchpoint where you interact with customers.
How to Review Reports
After you send a broadcast, you can track its performance in the "Reports" section. Key metrics to review include:
- Total Sent: The total number of emails sent.
- Delivered: The percentage of emails that were successfully delivered to the recipients' inboxes.
- Opened: The percentage of recipients who opened your email.
- Clicked: The percentage of recipients who clicked on a link in your email.
- Responded: The number of recipients who replied to your email.
- Bounced: The percentage of emails that could not be delivered.
- Opted out: The number of recipients who opted out of future emails.
- Marked as Spam: The number of recipients who marked your email as spam.
Broadcasts + Shared inbox
Broadcasts are more than just one-way messages. When a recipient replies to your email broadcast, it automatically creates a new, one-on-one conversation in your Heymarket inbox. This setting is configurable in the inbox setting (add link). This allows you to engage directly with your contacts, answer their questions, and build stronger relationships.
Promotional vs. Transactional Broadcasts
It's important to correctly classify your broadcasts as either promotional or transactional.
- Promotional: These are marketing messages, such as newsletters, special offers, and new product announcements.
- Transactional: These are functional messages that are triggered by a specific user action, such as an order confirmation, question and answers, instructions or just a 1-1 conversation.
Marking your broadcasts correctly is important for compliance and for ensuring that your transactional messages are not affected by marketing subscription preferences.
